Abstract

This study analyzes Joshua 1:1–9 as a foundational text that establishes a revelation-based leadership paradigm within a context of crisis transition. The passage marks the succession from Moses to Joshua, a moment potentially marked by social instability and questions of authority legitimacy. However, existing studies tend to focus on motivational aspects rather than the structural mechanism of divine legitimacy within the Deuteronomistic framework. Employing a qualitative approach, this research integrates historical, cultural, geopolitical, and literary analysis within a Deuteronomistic theological framework. The findings indicate that Joshua’s legitimacy derives from divine appointment and covenant continuity rather than the reproduction of Moses’ charisma or political calculation. The centrality of the Torah is presented as the key to success, while courage is understood as a faith-response grounded in the promise of divine presence amid geopolitical asymmetry. The text shifts leadership from a charismatic-militaristic model toward a covenantal paradigm rooted in revelation and normative obedience. Theologically, Joshua 1:1–9 offers a stable, transgenerational, and succession-resilient model of leadership. Thus, the passage functions not merely as a historical transition narrative but as a normative theological framework for sustaining covenant communities in times of crisis.
